1.       Damp

It is essential to consider whether you have damp within your basement or not.  This is the first step of a refinished basement project; before you can even contemplate the planning of your extra space.

You will need to walk round the basement with a bright light looking for cracks in the walls, places where water can enter and whether there is any damp in the walls or floor.  If you discover any, you will need to factor a damp proof layer into your plans.  This will prevent your inner walls from becoming saturated.  Of course, wherever possible you should repair the walls and floor to ensure damp will not even arrive at the damp proof layer.

2.       Height

The next step to a successful refinished basement is recording the height in different areas of your basement.  You need to be able to walk round comfortably allowing for floors and ceilings.  If this is not an option then you may need professional help to lower the existing floor; if it is possible.

3.       Plan

Once you have evaluated the space you will be able to measure it and start drawing your refinished basement plan.  This will allow for any height issues; internal wall creation and the location of the room or rooms you wish to put into your new space.  There are hundreds of ideas online to help you create the perfect space for your needs.  It is worth making sure that the space fits your needs first and is not just a statement!

4.       Creating the Walls

When you build the walls it is advisable to set them in from the external wall by approximately ten centimeters.  This will allow for pipes and electrical wires; generally without needing to move them.  It will also help to keep the area warm and prevent damp from getting in; if this is an issue.

5.       Insulation

The gap in the walls will also allow you to put insulation into the walls.  Although your basement may be surrounded by soil it is still likely to be one of the coldest spaces in your home as heat rises.  However, with plenty of insulation you will need minimal heat to make a very comfortable space.

6.       Light and Heat

To maximize the space available it is advisable to recess the lights into the ceiling.  This will ensure you can have a well finished ceiling in your refinished basement but without detracting from the height.

Likewise, you may find it beneficial to install heating into the baseboards.  Unless you have a high clearance under floor will not be an option but the base boards can be extremely effective at heating the refinished basement.

7.       Ventilation

Finally, you should consider the ventilation in your basement.  A refinished basement can be sealed tight to ensure maximum warmth and comfort.  Whilst this is desirable it is worth looking at the area where the furnace is houses.  It will need a good source of ventilation.
